The four Connick windows on the south aisle are known as "the Gospel Windows" because each consists of New Testament scenes from one of the four Gospels. They are fine examples of a typical medieval style, known as "Medallion Windows" because each contains eight circlet scenes or "medallions." They are always "read" from the bottom line to the top and from left to right in each line to keep the story in chronological order. The window nearest the transept is the Gospel Window according to Matthew, and St. Matthew himself sits in the quatrefoil at the top. (Start in lower left corner and read up the columns from left to right.)

Baptism of Christ—MATT. 3:13-17. An angel stands nearby and a dove hovers over Christ, as John the Baptist pours water from the River Jordan upon Christ's head.

The Holy Family in the Carpenter Shop at Nazareth—MATT. 2:23. The young Jesus carries wood to Joseph while Mary spins her wool.

Adoration of the Magi—MATT. 2:1-12. Joseph stands beside Mary and the Christ Child as the three kings offer gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh—for king and priest and sacrifice. The border shows a shepherd below and in an upper corner, an angel and a star.

Joseph's Dream—MATT. 1:18-21. Matthew's is the only Gospel that tells o£ an Annunciation to Joseph! Appearing to Joseph in a dream, the angel foretells the birth of the Messiah. The unicorn in the border is a symbol of the Incarnation.

The Temptation of Christ—MATT. 4:1 - 11. Christ stands on a pinnacle as an angel comes to minister to Him and a green Satan, forked tail between his legs, dejectedly departs.

Ministry of John the Baptist—MATT. 3:1-12. A few people listen to the voice crying in the wilderness, "Repent ye, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Small locusts in the border indicate the wilderness.

The Flight into Egypt—MATT. 2:13-15. Joseph leads the donkey bearing Mary and the Christ Child as a dove hovers overhead and the sheltering cherry tree blooms beside them. The menacing figure of one of Herod's soldiers waits in the border behind them.

The Nativity—MATT. 1: 22-25. Mary holds the newborn Jesus as Joseph bends over them. In Joseph's hand is the flowering staff symbolic of his divine selection as the spouse of Mary.
